DR – Day 2

Today is day three in the D.R., but day two in our sites plus it’s a beautiful and rainy day, a nice cool breeze and sunny skies. We woke up at the crack of dawn to a rooster crowing, cows mooing and the pitter-patter of a light drizzle on our tin roofs. All of us had devotion in the book of Daniel and worship in Spanish and English and some really great brown sugar and oatmeal pancakes for breakfast. We all packed our coolers got into our groups and headed out for the day. I have Special Education at Genesis, the “G” is pronounced as an “H” in Spanish. Anyways its this two story building with four or five rooms and they have kids ranging from 5-25 and they all range from autism to cerebral palsy and some are not even diagnosed. The kids are all different kinds of people with different personalities and some of are just firecrackers and other more reserved and collective. They are all so amazing and I am so excited to spend the next two weeks and be poured into by the staff and the kids. You can literally see God working in these kids lives and how much love is poured into them and how they just have nothing but smiley faces. We spent the day hanging out with Courtney, who is a teacher at the school, she has been there for like two years and she is from Southern California and she has a heart that is over flowing with God’s love and she puts so much of her life into these kids and she does everything she can do in her power to make sure everyone is happy and well taken care of. They also did cooking class today and we got to help them make a food called La Banderas it means “ The Flag”. It consists of white rice, red beans and chicken – its traditional here and its really good and one of my new favorites. Then we did P.E. and recess and we ran around and had a ton of fun with them while playing games, puzzles. I played Jenga with a young boy whose name is Juan Carlos and he is so smart and super sweet. We then did worship while we waited for kids to be picked up and that was fun too. At the end of the day we made a house visit to one of the girls whose name is Henny and she is rambunctious, loud and she radiates joy. She loves to be around people and the center of attention and she’s a lot of fun. At the end of the day we get all the food scraps and feed it to the goat in the backyard – his name is Chevos. We do all we can to help them out and benefit the kids and tomorrow we build that same goat a feeding trough and clean up her living area. God’s love is strong here and He is present. He moves amazing things through amazing people who are so willing to be His instruments and touch people’s lives. I can’t wait to be one of those tools in His plan.
