New challenges

This week at Joshua we started our first class in the book of John. Our teacher, Brian, was very entertaining and made the introduction to the class fun. With one week in, we appreciated his video clips during class. We also had our first book discussion this week. We discussed Brad Bell’s Walking with a Limp. Along with starting the first academic parts of Joshua, we also attended a food safety class to prepare us for working in the kitchen at Joshua and down in main camp.

This week we also began our first chore assignments. Each room of boys is paired up with a room of girls to tackle a housekeeping chore to keep the building looking spiffy! Working together in this way has helped us grow closer together, giving us a sense of unity and togetherness.

Each day we usually have an amount of time called “flex time.” We can use our flex time in many different ways. We can go outside, go workout, get ahead on homework, play spike ball, play chess, visit with other students, take a nap, play a board game, go on hikes, go down to the lake, and get some practice walking the hill! A lot of students also like to spend their free time checking their email, calling their family or friends, or checking Facebook to stay connected with people outside of Joshua.

Another new experience this week was some of us got trained as grill cooks to work down in main camp. We learned the location and how to take care of all the equipment.

Each evening a member of the staff discussed certain topics. Sam discussed how to fight for your friends through the story of the healing of the paralyzed man. The challenge Sam brought to us is to have faith in Jesus to bring our friends to his feet in all we do. The next speaker was Seth who talked about being right versus being righteous. We learned that “knowledge puffs up, love builds up.” Jesus would fulfill the needs of others and then speak. So our challenge is to show our righteousness through actions first.
