Ahoy Mateys, two of Sam’s Hams here.
This morning, we embarked on our voyage to LA LA Land (who apparently didn’t win best picture) at around 7:20, arriving in LA around 2:30. But in all seriousness our drive down was swell and we dove straight into some eVANgelism to adVANce the kingdom of God (AHAHA van puns). We got to be a light for Jesus in many different ways today. Some played a pick up game with a bunch of guys in the park, while others loved on a woman by getting her something to keep her warm. Most of us walked around passing out bags of water and food to those who needed it. Some of us got a chance to meet and chat with a man who is a pastor. He comes to the park we were at to play guitar and chat with people that walked by. A few of us had the opportunity to pray with him as well. It was awesome and encouraging to see such a light for God. After we finished walking around the park, it was as if we had gone back to the DR for dinner; we had plantains, chicken, rice, and passion fruit juice. It was delicious. After dinner, we got back into our vans and caraVANned to skid row. While driving through the streets lined with makeshift tents and sleeping bags, we were able to see the level of poverty within our own backyard. The contrast between where skid row ends and the high-rises begin is quite unbelievable. As we drove away, it was crazy realizing that there were people going about their normal lives, just yards away from some of the most impoverished people. Tomorrow we will be shipping off to two different sites to serve the LA community, but for now, it is bedtime.
